Rockdale County is a small county in the northwestern part of Georgia. Approximately 86,000 people live in Rockdale County, of which the city of Conyers is the county seat. Rockdale County is one of several counties comprising the Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Roswell, GA Metropolitan Statistical Area. Residents and visitors alike enjoy the hot and toasty summers and cool, mild winters.

A Brief History

Rockdale County was established in 1870 and named after the Rockdale Baptist Church contained within. The church is named so because of the rock strata sitting under the red top soil used to construct it in 1846. Rockdale County was made from parts of land taken from nearby Newton, Henry, Walton, Gwinnett, and DeKalb counties. The only incorporated town in the area at that time was Conyers, which solidified it as the choice for county seat.
